Letter

A note from Toby:

Toby

My name is Toby Walecka, you may know me as the daughter of Stephanie Lipow and Tony Walecka. I am 15 years old and a sophomore at Alameda High School. This summer I will be participating in the Amigos de las Américas program. AMIGOS is a private, non-profit, non-religious organization that trains and sends high school and college students to Latin America and allows youth to improve their leadership skills and step out of their comfort zones through uniquely multicultural and enriching projects. I am writing to ask you to consider making a donation to AMIGOS. If you would like to learn more about AMIGOS, you can visit the website:  www.amigosinternational.org

As an AMIGOS volunteer, I will be in Latin America for 6-8 weeks this summer. Although I will not find out which country I am going to until late February, I am hoping to go to Nicaragua, Paraguay, or Mexico. While in country, I will be fully immersed in Spanish, living with a host family, and collaborating with the community to carry out a project of their choosing. The projects can range from building a playground to painting a mural to organizing a youth group. In addition to the project, I will be running campamentos, or summer camps, for the local youth, which will be a fun and effective way of getting to know the community.

All donations to the organization will be used to fund community projects and may be used to provide financial aid to eligible participants. My family pays for my expenses, so I am not asking you to support my trip. Here are a few examples of how contributions are used across AMIGOS projects: $10 pays for paint for a mural or supplies toothbrushes for 30 people, $45 can buy a water storage tank to supply safe drinking water, and $250 provides seeds for family gardens in 20+ communities.

I am writing to request that you make a donation to AMIGOS. If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, you can do so here. Please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our home page, http://www.eastbayamigos.org. Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible. Amigos de las Américas is exempt from Federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I look forward to sharing my experience with you when I return.
