A note from Sawyer:

Sawyer

February 2016

My name is Sawyer Essabhoy. You may know me as the son of Juzer and Connie Essabhoy. I am a 16 year old sophomore at Miramonte High School. This year, I am participating with a program called Amigos de las Américas. AMIGOS is a private, non-profit, non-religious organization that trains and sends youth leaders to Latin America to live with a host family and carry out a community-based project. AMIGOS has a mission to give youth leaders throughout the Americas an opportunity to participate in a multicultural, meaningful, and self-directed project. I decided to participate with AMIGOS because I want to experience Latin cultures, and I am up for the challenge of full immersion. If you would like to learn more about AMIGOS, please visit the following website: http://amigosinternational.org/.

As an AMIGOS participant, I will be going to Latin America this summer for 6-8 weeks. Although I don’t know where I am going yet, I hope to go to Panama, the Dominican Republic, or Mexico. Wherever I go, I will be living with a host family and will initiate and organize a community-chosen project. My main purpose is to bring community youth-leaders together and start a project that the community can continue even after AMIGOS volunteers leave. I will also be leading daily, 2 hour long camps with the local youth, and I will be working with the community entirely in Spanish. The most exciting, and also nerve-racking, part of it is that I will be fully immersed in the culture, language, and daily activities of the community.

AMIGOS would not be possible without the help of much-appreciated donors. Any and all contributions are welcome. To give you an idea of how contributions are used, here are some examples: $10 pays for paint for a mural or toothbrush supplies for 30 people, $45 buys a water storage tank to provide safe drinking water, and $250 provides seeds for family gardens in 20+ communities. While every volunteer family is responsible for training and travel fees, not all families can afford the full fee. Your contribution could also be used as financial aid to allow a broader range of youth to participate with AMIGOS.

I am writing to request that you consider a donation to AMIGOS. If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, you can do so here. Please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our home page, http://www.eastbayamigos.org. Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible. Amigos de las Américas is exempt from Federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter, and for considering my request to donate to AMIGOS. When I return at summer’s end, I will be happy to share my experiences with you!

Sincerely,

Sawyer
