A note from Natalie:

nramos

My name is Natalie Ramos. You may know me as the daughter of Ferdinand and Pam. I am sixteen years old and am in my junior year at Oakland Technical High School. This summer I will be participating in the Amigos de las Américas program. AMIGOS is a private, non-profit organization that trains and sends high school and college students to Latin America to live with host families and carry out community development projects. Amigos de las Américas enables youth throughout the Americas to improve their leadership skills and step out of their comfort zones in a way that would be hard to achieve at home. I am writing to ask you to consider making a donation to AMIGOS. If you would like to learn more about the organization, you can visit the website: www.amigoslink.org.

As an AMIGOS participant, I will be in Latin America for 6-7 weeks this summer. Although I will not find out which country I am going to until late February, I am hoping to go to Panama, Nicaragua, or the Dominican Republic. While in country, I will be fully immersed in Spanish (yikes!), living with a host family and helping to organize the community to carry out a project of their choosing. These projects can be anything from building a playground to painting a mural to organizing a youth group. In addition to the project, I will be running campamentos, or summer camps, for the local youth, which I think will be a fun and effective way of getting to know the community. I am especially excited to become immersed in a new culture and collaborate with people who have backgrounds far different from my own.

AMIGOS’ projects throughout Latin America would not be possible without the help of greatly appreciated donors. To give you an idea of how contributions are used, here are a few examples: $10 pays for paint for a mural or supplies toothbrushes for 30 people, $45 can buy a water storage tank to provide clean and safe drinking water, and $250 provides seeds for family gardens in more than 20 communities. While every participant’s family is responsible for a fee that covers training and travel expenses, not all families can afford the fee, so your donation could also be put towards scholarships. This makes it possible for a wide variety of youth to participate in the program.

If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our homepage (www.eastbayamigos.org) to access the online donation process. AMIGOS de las Americas is exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter! I am so excited for this experience!
