A note from Charlie:

cthudium

¡Hola!

My name is Charlie Thudium and I am a sophomore at Oakland Technical High School. You may know me as Kent and Julie’s son. I have been taking Spanish classes since middle school and this year I felt ready to participate in the program Amigos de las Américas. AMIGOS is a nonprofit, nonreligious organization that sends youth from all over the country to Central and South America. For six to eight weeks of their summer, participants work on projects with the help of local community members meant to make lasting change. The mission of AMIGOS is to empower youth leaders throughout the Americas by giving them the opportunity to participate in multicultural exchange and meaningful, self-directed projects. If you are interested in learning more about AMIGOS please visit their website at: www.amigoslink.org.

As an AMIGOS participant I will be living with a host family and will be fully immersed in the activities, culture and language of my community. I won’t know where I am going until late February, but I am hoping to be assigned to a project in Paraguay, Ecuador, or Oaxaca, Mexico. Wherever I end up going, I will be working in collaboration with local youth and adult leaders to create and realize a sustainable project for their community. In addition, I will be participating in daily activities such as leading classes and after school camps for children in Spanish! By the end of my stay, I am hoping to have made many new friendships and gained valuable experience, as well as having made a lasting impact.

The work AMIGOS does in Latin America would not be possible without the help and support of many valued donors. A contribution of any amount is greatly welcome. Some examples of what a specific donation can buy include: $10 pays for paint for a mural or supplies toothbrushes for 30 people, $45 can buy a water storage tank to provide safe drinking water, and $250 provides seeds for family gardens in over 20 communities. My training and travel expenses are paid for by my family while donations support in-country project costs. Donations also provide financial support to participants whose families are unable to afford the entire cost of sending a son or daughter to another country.

If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our homepage (www.eastbayamigos.org) to access the online donation process. AMIGOS de las Americas is exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and considering making a donation.

Muchas gracias!
