A note from Colin:

Dear Friends and Family,

My name is Colin Dixon and I am a student at Piedmont High School. This summer I am lucky enough to be going to South America again on a community service trip.  This year I will be volunteering with the organization Amigos de las Américas. AMIGOS is a nonprofit, private, and non-religious organization that trains youth leaders and sends them to Latin America for the summer. During the summer participants live with a host family and work with local community leaders and youth groups to facilitate a community development project.  The mission of AMIGOS is to empower youth leaders throughout the Americas and allow them to participate in meaningful, multicultural projects.  I wanted to join the AMIGOS program to challenge myself, both to gain the experience and to find confidence in myself.  If you’re curious and want to learn more, you can find more information at: www.amigoslink.org.

I will be spending 6-8 weeks in Latin America, and I hope to go to either, Panama, Ecuador or Paraguay.  I will not find out where I will be going until late February, but wherever I go I will live with a host family and work to organize a community development project.  My main goal will be to organize and connect the youth leaders and community leaders in order to start a project that will be continued and finished after I leave.  I will also be running small camps throughout the summer, with the younger kids in the communities, in order to teach them about topics from health to children’s rights.  Possibly the hardest and most exciting part will be that I will be fully immersed in the culture and the Spanish language, and even though it may be difficult I can’t wait to leave.

The AMIGOS projects are not possible without the support of much-appreciated donors.  Any and all contributions are welcome.  Here are some examples of what the donations could be used for: $10 pays for paint for a mural or toothbrush supplies for 30 people, $45 buys a water storage tank to provide safe drinking water, and $250 provides seeds for family gardens in 20+ communities.  Besides supporting the in-country projects, your donation may help pay for a scholarship, which goes to a family who can’t pay all of the family fees (which cover their training and travel costs).  This broadens the range of the people able to participate in the organization.

If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our homepage (www.eastbayamigos.org) to access the online donation process. AMIGOS de las Americas is exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible.

Thank you so much for actually reading this whole letter and for considering my request to donate to AMIGOS.
