A note from Alex:

¡Hola!

I’m Alex Kelly, a 16-year-old junior attending Acalanes High School. You may know me as Jason and Olga’s son. This year I am participating in an organization called AMIGOS de las Américas, also known simply as “AMIGOS.” AMIGOS is a private, non-profit, non-religious organization that sends high school and college students to live with a host family and work on community-based projects in Latin America. I am asking you to give a donation in my behalf to AMIGOS. The mission of AMIGOS is to inspire and build young leaders for the future. It gives youth the chance to participate in a multicultural, influential and self-directed project. I hope that this experience will expose me to other cultures and affect my character. If you would like to learn more about the organization, here is the URL to its website: www.amigoslink.org.

AMIGOS is a program where youth participants spend six to eight weeks of their summer to work on projects in Latin America. An important aspect of being an AMIGOS participant is that the organization supports their goals that will benefit the community. While we are in Latin America, we begin a community-chosen project that they can continue after the participants leave in the summer. As an AMIGOS volunteer, there are all sorts of different projects I can be assigned to, from leading classes about health and hygiene to organizing community events. I will be living with a host family, teaching classes and engaging with community leaders entirely in Spanish. Although I will not know where I am going this summer until late February, I hope to go to either Mexico, Panama, Nicaragua or Costa Rica.

AMIGOS’ work in Latin America would not be possible without the help of our much-appreciated donors. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated The money that I raise through fundraising does not pay for my trip: that’s my parents’ job. What I am asking for is a donation that supports community projects and may provide financial aid for those AMIGOS participants who share my interest but may not have sufficient resources to be involved in the program. Contributions help purchase anything, such as paint, cement, seeds, class workshops and training materials, and other needed items. Any amount is greatly valued, but some specific examples: $10 pays for 30 toothbrushes or paint for a mural, $45 can buy a water storage tank to provide clean water, and $250 provides seeds for a family garden in over twenty communities.

If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our homepage (www.eastbayamigos.org) to access the online donation process. AMIGOS de las Americas is exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible.

I am very excited I am for my summer in Latin America! Thank you for reading and considering my request for you to donate to AMIGOS.

Otra vez, ¡muchas gracias! Amigos
