A note from Allison:

¡Hola! I am Alison Hodge, a junior at Las Lomas High School. You may know me as the daughter of Darrel and Michele Hodge. Throughout the year, I have been participating in a program called Amigos de las Américas. AMIGOS is a nonprofit, nonreligious, independent organization that trains and sends participants from North and South America to a Latin American community for six to eight weeks in the summer. You can learn more about AMIGOS by visiting www.amigoslink.org or by going to our chapter’s website, www.eastbayamigos.org.

This summer I will be going to a community in Latin America for nearly two months. Although I do will not find out where I am going until the end of February, I am hoping to go to either the Dominican Republic, Mexico, or Panama. While I am in country, my partner and I will be living with a host family. During our time in the community, we will work with the local community leaders to develop and carry out a sustainable project specific to their needs. As well as helping lead a development project, we will work with local youth five times a week in a summer camp, playing games and teaching them about social themes. I am excited to be doing AMIGOS because I will be able to strengthen my Spanish and leadership skills. I will be doing this all in Spanish. Most importantly for me, I will experience cultural immersion and be able to learn about Latin American culture.

My parents have paid the family fee for training and travel expenses that enable me to participate; however, contributions help pay for supplies for the community projects as well as enable AMIGOS to offer financial assistance to participants requiring it. Your $10 contribution could pay for paint for a mural or toothbrushes for 30 people; $45 can buy a water storage tank; $250 provides seeds for family gardens in 20 or more communities.

If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our homepage (www.eastbayamigos.org) to access the online donation process. AMIGOS de las Americas is exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read this letter and for considering making a contribution Amigos de las Américas.

¡Muchas gracias!
