A note from Allie:

Dear Friends and Family,

My name is Allie.  You may know me as the daughter of Doug and Leslie.  I am a seventeen-year-old junior at Piedmont High School.  This year, I have the opportunity to participate with AMIGOS de las Américas.  AMIGOS is a private, non-profit, non-religious organization that trains and sends youth leaders throughout Latin America to collaborate in community development projects and take part in a rich cultural exchange.  If you would like to know more about AMIGOS, here is the website: http://www.amigoslink.org/

I have not yet been assigned my destination, but I will most likely be going to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, or Paraguay and living with a host family.  My main purpose will be to work with members of the community to launch a sustainable, community chosen project.  Projects range anywhere from teaching classes on health and hygiene to running a summer program for kids to planting a community garden, depending on the community’s interest and need.  I am very excited to take on the challenge of full immersion of culture and language, and work with people on a project like this.

I am writing to ask for a donation to help make AMIGOS’ mission in Latin America possible.  Any size contribution is welcome and greatly appreciated!  To give you an idea of how contributions are used: $10 pays for paint for a mural or toothbrush supplies for 30 people, $45 can buy a water storage tank to provide safe drinking water, and $250 provides seeds for family gardens in 20+ communities.  While each participant’s family pays a fee for training and travel, not all families can afford the full fee, so your donation could also be used for scholarships.  This makes it possible for a broad range of youth to participate in the program.

If you would like to donate to AMIGOS, please click on the “Donate Now” button below or on our homepage (www.eastbayamigos.org) to access the online donation process. AMIGOS de las Americas is exempt from federal income tax as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions made by donors are tax-deductible.

I want to thank you so much for taking the time to read my letter and for considering my request.  I am super excited about my summer in Latin America!

Again, ¡muchas gracias!
