Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible to become an AMIGOS participant you must meet three basic requirements:
- Be 16 years of age by December 31 of the year of your summer service in Latin America (note: special screening if turning 16 after September 1)
- Have completed 2 years of high school Spanish language (or equivalent) before your departure for Latin America
- Have completed your sophomore year of high school before your departure to Latin America
How to Get Involved in AMIGOS
You can start your journey with AMIGOS today and spend your next summer in Latin America by becoming an Amigos participant.
Follow these steps to become an AMIGOS participant with the East Bay Chapter:
- Attend an Information Session in September/October. The information session will provide you with an introduction to the program, and should be attended by prospective participants and their parent/guardian. RSVP to an information session by clicking here.

- Complete a Participant Application. The application instructions are posted on the Amigos Application for Summer 2018 Page.
- Attend a Family Interview. Family interviews generally will take place on October 20-21. Family Interview sign-ups will be conducted at the Information Sessions.
- Meet the Following Requirements throughout the year before departure for Latin America:
- Attend approximately one training meeting a month between January and May 2019.
- Attend approximately one Chapter meeting a month with a parent/guardian between November 2018 and June 2019. These meetings may be combined with the training meetings above.
- Participate in Chapter fundraising efforts. Volunteers who wish to defray a portion of the Family Fee will sell grapefruit, poinsettias, coffee and pecans in November and December. All volunteers will participate in a letter-writing fundraising campaign in early 2019.
- Contribute a Family Fee to cover the costs of training and airfare to Latin America. Financial assistance is available.
